This option was designed for parents who believe their children are ready to explore the vast universe of YouTube videos. The company will use a combination of user input, machine learning, and human feedback to determine which videos to add.
New opportunities for families
YouTube understands the importance of striking a balance between allowing children and teens to gain independence more safely while also giving parents ways to exercise control. In addition to choosing content settings, parents will be able to manage their child’s watch and search history from their child’s account settings. Parents can also use other controls offered by Google’s Family Link, including screen timers. The company plans to continue adding new parental control features, such as the ability to block content, over time.
When parents give access to YouTube, their child’s experience will be similar to regular YouTube, but certain features will be disabled to protect younger audiences. For example, the company will not show personalized ads or ads in certain categories. At launch, YouTube will also disable in-app purchases, as well as creation and commenting features. Because self-expression and community are integral to the development of both YouTube and children, over time, the company plans to work with parents and experts to add some of these features using an age-appropriate and parentally controlled approach.
Investing in YouTube Kids
YouTube is creating this new experience for parents who believe their older children are ready to use YouTube, but still recommend that younger children use YouTube Kids so they can watch on their own and have a more limited viewing experience.
With availability in over 80 countries, YouTube Kids is now used by over 35 million viewers each week. YouTube will continue to expand the product’s reach, add new features, and offer several new tools for parents, such as the highly requested ability for parents to select specific videos and channels from the main YouTube platform that they would like their child to explore on YouTube Kids.
In the long term, YouTube management hopes this will provide a safer environment for older children to explore their interests, learn new skills, connect with communities that share their passions, while also giving parents more opportunities to support their children's online experiences.
